November 2024
Dear AAPIPers,
We hope you are hanging in there and taking care of yourself. It feels like an understatement to say a lot is going on - much of it challenging, heartbreaking, and scary. From the results of the 2024 US elections and passage of HR 9495 to the untimely deaths of philanthropic leaders of color Gladys Krigger Washington and Coya White Hat-Artichoker, we recognize this is not an easy time for our community.
As we prepare for a second Trump Administration, AAPIP will not be deterred from continued pursuit of our community care and philanthropic advocacy goals. While we are hopeful that hateful campaign rhetoric is hyperbole and will not materialize in action or policy, we have lived through challenging political times before. We are not naive about the very real threats posed to many of our community members right now and in the near future.
To that end, we invite you to a three-part learning series to support an infrastructure within philanthropy and beyond for race-explicit grantmaking and programming. We also encourage you to continue to save the date for our 35th Anniversary Conference - Early Bird Member-Only Registration opens the first week of December, and to stay tuned for the announcement of a new partnership, Power in Solidarity: Hawaii, in collaboration with Native Americans in Philanthropy and Native Hawaiian Philanthropy.
Hope is not lost. Progress is still possible.
In community,
AAPIP

Learning Series:
Protecting Race-Explicit Programming
Session 1: Situating Asian Americans in the Affirmative Action and Racial Justice Dialogue
Thursday, December 12 11AM PST / 2PM EST
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2023 decision that effectively bans affirmative action and race-conscious admissions policies in higher education, there has been an onslaught of attacks to DEI programs, including over 100 legal challenges to programs related to internships, grantmaking, scholarships, and other policies that strive to uplift or provide support for communities that have historically been underserved or underrepresented.
It is against this historical backdrop that AAPIP has a responsibility and moral obligation to take a leadership role in educating, activating, and mobilizing our network and the broader philanthropic sector about our shared movements and intersectional identities. Through a partnership with Chinese for Affirmative Action, AAPIP plans to launch a series of discussions and in-person advocacy intended to (re)situate Asian Americans within the broader conversations around civil rights, and affirmative action specifically; provide an overview of the current legal landscape with an emphasis on how race conscious programs can still thrive despite the Supreme Court decision; and develop tangible, collective actions to support an infrastructure within philanthropy and beyond for race-explicit grantmaking, programs, and policies. Above all, this is the time to be brave, creative, and resilient, and we hope to inspire and mobilize our network.
Member-Only Early Bird Conference Registration Opening Soon!
For nearly 35 years, in a range of political environments, AAPIP has endeavored to support AANHPI people working in philanthropy and to increase foundation funding aimed at advancing the inclusion, health, and wellbeing of AANHPI communities. Now more than ever we reaffirm our commitment to that work and to standing in solidarity to advance racial equity and social justice. Don't miss this must-attend event for AANHPI philanthropy professionals and allies to join together in support of each other and our communities. Share Your Community Listening Stories with Fund for Shared Insight
Our colleagues at Fund for Shared Insight and their learning and evaluation partner ORS Impact are inviting foundations to share their community listening stories to help demonstrate what’s possible when funders listen to the people and communities most impacted by their decisions. By sharing your experience, you can help Shared Insight inspire and support other funders on their listening journeys and explore important issues around how foundations listen to shift power. Please take five minutes to share your story. ORS Impact will follow up with foundations that complete the short form.
The California Wellness Foundation is pleased to announce that API social justice leader John Kim, President and CEO of Catalyst California, has been appointed to the foundation’s board of directors. At Catalyst California, Kim works to uplift the voices and needs of low-income communities of color to transform systems and expand opportunities for all.
Also joining the California Wellness Foundation board is Kaci Patterson, founder of the Black Equity Collective. Patterson has spent her career championing the cause of Black communities in California, and her dedication to racial equity and community empowerment has inspired transformative change to address structural inequities and create pathways to opportunity and wellness.
AAPIP is in deep appreciation for the ongoing support from our 400+ member network who join us in supporting AANHPI people in philanthropy and working to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at advancing the inclusion, health, and wellbeing of AANHPI communities in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
