December 2024
Dear AAPIPers,
Happy Holidays! As 2024 comes to a close, we hope the season brings abundant opportunities to celebrate, relax, and recharge in preparation for the new year. In addition to countless cultural and religious holidays, December also marks the anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document which asserts the “inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family” and has inspired over 70 human rights treaties. This month, let’s ring in the new year with our families—whether biological, chosen, or our larger human family—while reflecting on what we can do to support and protect one another.
This month, we also have exciting opportunities to connect with your community through AAPIP! Today is the first of our three-part learning series to support an infrastructure within philanthropy and beyond for race-explicit grantmaking and programming. We also just announced our new collaboration, Power in Solidarity: Hawaii, in partnership with Native Americans in Philanthropy and Native Hawaiian Philanthropy. Early Bird Member-Only Registration for our 35th Anniversary Conference has just opened, and members can now access their code via email and their membership portals. Not a member yet? Join today and you’ll still be able to secure your spot before general registration and take advantage of the discount.
See you next year!
In community,
AAPIP

Learning Series:
Protecting Race-Explicit Programming
Session 1: Situating Asian Americans in the Affirmative Action and Racial Justice Dialogue
Thursday, December 12 11AM PST / 2PM EST
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2023 decision that effectively bans affirmative action and race-conscious admissions policies in higher education, there has been an onslaught of attacks to DEI programs, including over 100 legal challenges to programs related to internships, grantmaking, scholarships, and other policies that strive to uplift or provide support for communities that have historically been underserved or underrepresented.
It is against this historical backdrop that AAPIP has a responsibility and moral obligation to take a leadership role in educating, activating, and mobilizing our network and the broader philanthropic sector about our shared movements and intersectional identities. Through a partnership with Chinese for Affirmative Action, AAPIP plans to launch a series of discussions and in-person advocacy intended to (re)situate Asian Americans within the broader conversations around civil rights, and affirmative action specifically; provide an overview of the current legal landscape with an emphasis on how race conscious programs can still thrive despite the Supreme Court decision; and develop tangible, collective actions to support an infrastructure within philanthropy and beyond for race-explicit grantmaking, programs, and policies. Above all, this is the time to be brave, creative, and resilient, and we hope to inspire and mobilize our network.
Member-Only Early Bird Conference Registration Open!
For nearly 35 years, in a range of political environments, AAPIP has endeavored to support AANHPI people working in philanthropy and to increase foundation funding aimed at advancing the inclusion, health, and wellbeing of AANHPI communities. Now more than ever we reaffirm our commitment to that work and to standing in solidarity to advance racial equity and social justice. Don't miss this must-attend event for AANHPI philanthropy professionals and allies to join together in support of each other and our communities. AAPIP’s Anniversary Conference will offer space for participants to:
deepen their understanding of AANHPI community priorities and assets;

Power in Solidarity Partnership Launches with 2025 Funder Tour in Hawaii
Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, Native Americans in Philanthropy, and Native Hawaiian Philanthropy have announced the formation of the Power in Solidarity: Hawaii, a new partnership designed to uplift Native Hawaiian communities and advocate for increased philanthropic funding from national and international funders. Throughout 2025, the Power in Solidarity: Hawaii Partnership will collaborate on a multitude of upcoming projects, including:
A new report on trends, gaps, and opportunities related to foundation funding for Native Hawaiian communities;
A series of webinars focused on Native Hawaiian community priorities and assets;
A funder learning tour in the Fall of 2025 to bring grantmakers to the Islands to see first hand the priorities and assets of Native Hawaiian communities and inspire philanthropic investment.
“Building bridges in philanthropy is a key first step to increase community investment that will drive the growth and well-being of Native Hawaiian communities,” said Ku’uleinani Maunupau, CEO of Native Hawaiian Philanthropy. “We are excited to announce this partnership – continuing to grow critical relationships within philanthropy that will help us drive funding to enrich Native Hawaiian communities, and support native Hawaiians’ legal and political rights.”
The APAICS Congressional Fellowship is a 12 month, paid opportunity to serve in a congressional office or committee, learn about public policy, and witness democracy in action! Fellows acquire skills and build a network that serves as a foundation for a career in civil service. This opportunity is intended as an opportunity for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to gain experience at the federal level.
Share Your Community Listening Stories with Fund for Shared Insight
Our colleagues at Fund for Shared Insight and their learning and evaluation partner ORS Impact are inviting foundations to share their community listening stories to help demonstrate what’s possible when funders listen to the people and communities most impacted by their decisions. By sharing your experience, you can help Shared Insight inspire and support other funders on their listening journeys and explore important issues around how foundations listen to shift power. Please take five minutes to share your story. ORS Impact will follow up with foundations that complete the short form.
AAPIP is in deep appreciation for the ongoing support from our 400+ member network who join us in supporting AANHPI people in philanthropy and working to increase the scale and impact of philanthropic resources aimed at advancing the inclusion, health, and wellbeing of AANHPI communities in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
