January 2024
Dear AAPIPers,
As we enter into 2025, we are already seeing momentous challenges and are galvanized to lean into the opportunities afforded us. From the devastating and heartbreaking wildfires in Los Angeles that have affected hundreds of thousands - including many AANHPI individuals and families - to a changing of the guard in Washington, it has been an eventful few weeks.
Yet with the coming Year of the Snake - a year for transformation and rebirth - we are looking ahead to what is possible, both globally with the ceasefire in the war in Gaza and locally with the opportunity to strengthen bonds as we band together in community with partners and allies to advocate for a world rooted in social and racial justice.
Our 35th Anniversary Conference will be just one of many opportunities AAPIP provides to come together - so we hope you will consider joining us in Chicago later this Spring. Early-Bird Member-Only registration is open through January 31 and our call for RFPs is open through February 10.
We hope you are taking care of yourself and can make the most of the resources below.
In community,
AAPIP
AAPIP at 35: Looking Back on Everything AAPIP
As AAPIP celebrates its 35th Anniversary we want to take a moment to acknowledge the progress we’ve helped inspire in the field of philanthropy and beyond. These positive changes were only made possible because of our valued members, partners, and allies. Each month, we will share a highlight from our history.
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, racial and religious discrimination of Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities reached all new levels. In response, AAPIP helped establish and administer the Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) from 2006 to 2014. The CEF was a pooled fund coordinated by AAPIP to invest in and raise the visibility of AMEMSA communities. The CEF supported sixteen AMEMSA organizations to increase their capacities to better serve their communities, and provided convening space for them to connect with one another. Learn more here.

Learning Series Session 2:
Protecting Race-Explicit Programming
Session 2: Navigating the Current Legal Landscape
Tuesday, February 25 10AM PST / 1PM EST
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2023 decision that effectively bans affirmative action and race-conscious admissions policies in higher education, there has been an onslaught of attacks to DEI programs, including over 100 legal challenges to programs related to internships, grantmaking, scholarships, and other policies that strive to uplift or provide support for communities that have historically been underserved or underrepresented.
Join us for the second session of the learning series where we will have a conversation about the current state of the law and how litigation has been used successfully and unsuccessfully to expand or constrain civil rights. Learn how foundations and organizations can assess their risk, prepare for new attacks against DEI in the coming year, and why philanthropy can and should continue to prioritize race-explicit grantmaking and programming.

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Feedback Labs' updated Core Principles of High-Quality Listening and Feedback! Register now for their Core Principles webinar on January 29th to dive into these principles and explore how they can transform your work.
The APAICS Congressional Fellowship is a 12 month, paid opportunity to serve in a congressional office or committee, learn about public policy, and witness democracy in action! Fellows acquire skills and build a network that serves as a foundation for a career in civil service. This opportunity is intended as an opportunity for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to gain experience at the federal level.
Share Your Community Listening Stories with Fund for Shared Insight
Our colleagues at Fund for Shared Insight and their learning and evaluation partner ORS Impact are inviting foundations to share their community listening stories to help demonstrate what’s possible when funders listen to the people and communities most impacted by their decisions. By sharing your experience, you can help Shared Insight inspire and support other funders on their listening journeys and explore important issues around how foundations listen to shift power. Please take five minutes to share your story. ORS Impact will follow up with foundations that complete the short form.
